Walk on the Terraces
September 8
Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
The feast of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore, set up in 1985, is celebrated on 8 September every year in memory of the laying of the first stone of the cathedral which took place on the feast of the birth of Our Lady in 1296 (or according to others, 1298). The principal appointment of the day is the free opening of the terraces of the Duomo for the by now traditional “walk” at a height of thirty-two metres, which allows Florentines and visitors to enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view over the city of Florence.
The route follows the two sides of the cathedral, including the inner gallery of the counter-facade.
At the same time, there is the possibility of visiting free of charge the workshop of the Opera del Duomo in Via dello Studio 23/r, where the master masons work on the restoration of the marble works of the monumental complex of the cathedral.
From 1997 on, the celebrations have been rounded off by a final concert from the sacred music cycle O flos colende.
