Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore
| Instituted at the end of the late XIII century to superintend the construction of the new cathedral of Florence, the Opera di S. Maria del Fiore today finds itself administering a complex of monuments and historical buildings of extraordinary importance which in the course of centuries have developed around the cathedral church, and become a must visit for all visitors to the city. Though forming a coherent and structured nucleus, the complex is divided into a variety of “sites” characterized by a marked individuality and historical and functional specificity.

| It indeed comprises churches known worldwide, such as the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery, symbol of Florence since the Middle Ages, and joined to the Fabbriceria del Duomo only in 1777 following the suppression of the Opera di San Giovanni. These are joined by the remains of another church deeply rooted in the city’s history, the ancient cathedral of Santa Reparata that reemerged beneath the floor of the Duomo during archaeological excavations conducted between 1965 and 1973. Considerably less known is the little church of San Benedetto of medieval origin and it too, under the authority of the Opera di S. Maria del Fiore. The institution’s activity in conservation and valorization of works of art is fully testified by other sites, first and foremost the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, instituted in 1891 with the purpose of assembling the numerous masterpieces removed in the course of time from S. Maria del Fiore and from S. Giovanni. We must also remember the stonemasons’ workshop – where the Florentine artisan tradition that in the past created works of inestimable value, continues to operate for their conservation – and the new residence of the Opera, inaugurated in 1987.
